OnOne of the main requirements given to us by the municipality was to manage all the stormwater that falls within the catchment of the street. That is done with use of rain gardens (biofilters). Rain gardens use nature-based principles to manage water quality and quantity. They retain water close to where it falls and make it available as a source for plant irrigation.

In order to improve rain garden water quality, we have collaborated with Luleå University specifically to focus on the filters inside the rain gardens. The filters are composed of plants and substrate loaded with biochar, a carbonized biomass. This combination achieves a high level of cleaning by supporting natural processes in separating pollutants from contaminated water before it reaches the aquifer.
